Dogs like to interact with one another face to face. In the wild, dogs will gaze into each other’s eyes and lick each other’s faces to
communicate, but your face is just up so high! Your dog needs to be taught something other than jumping Jacks! Here are some tips!
Reinforce the sit always, everywhere and constantly! Be proactive. Sit means please!
Reinforce down, it is incompatible with jumping up.
Teach your dog "Touch": When puppy is targeting a hand with his/her nose, puppy is not jumping on you!
Play "Go Find It": When your puppy is looking for the treat, s/he is not jumping on you.
Settle: Teach your puppy to settle down on a mat or his/her bed or in the crate.
Doggy Zen: Teach your puppy impulse control. A toy held out to the side will only be tossed when the puppy is sitting. Petting only happens when puppy sits or lays down.
Polite Greeting: Done on a tether, holding puppy on a loose leash. Your puppy is reinforced for sitting as a person approaches. Jumping puppies are ignored and walked away from.
Relaxation: Shape Relaxation by sitting in a calm setting and mark and pay any behavior showing increased relaxation such as standing still, slower breathing, ears neutral, blinky eyes, looking down.
