Let them sniff!

To Sniff or Not to Sniff: Does your Dog Follow her Nose? | Instinct Dog Behavior & Training

Sniffing during a walk is a wonderful mental exercise for your dog. Sniffaris will get you a  calmer and more balanced dog. It is in your best interest to tire them out a little, so they won’t chew furniture and be destructive. When you go for a walk with your dog, pay attention to the time and amount of sniffing, not the actual distance you covered.  It's not about the amount of distance you go, it's what happens during the timeslot.  A 15-minute walk may notlead to an exhausted dog but if you let him/her sniff the area, check things out and walk, mental needs will be satisfied.

Studies tell us that it is important to let our dogs make their own decisions sometimes. They live all their life under some kind of control, may it be the fenced yard, the leash, the time they get feed and where they are allowed to go. We do all this to keep them safe and protect their overall well-being. But--living under too much control can lead to an unhappy, depressed dog who may lose his/her curiosity for the world around them. By giving them simple choices, like which path to choose or what toy they want to play with today, will make their everyday life more enjoyable and satisfied.

So, take a chance and go on a sniffari! Give your dog more opportunities to use his/her powerful sense of smell and they will enjoy their walk more. They will also be more physically and mentally stimulated, gain more choice and freedom, and, ultimately, be more tired and relaxed.  Let them sniff!
