Five Lessons From Waggin Train Chicken Treats

Five Lessons From Waggin Train
by Dogs Naturally on February 27, 2012

This month, we have received dozens of emails from distraught pet owners who suspect their dogs have been poisoned by pet foods. As of February 10,, 2012,the FDA has received 537 reports of illnesses in dogs, including 467 reports since it issued a renewed warning about chicken jerky treats from China in November. That number includes 353 reports logged in 2011 and 184 submitted so far this year.

There are more brands implicated than Waggin Train, but once we did a little digging into what could be the cause of the sick and dead dogs, we found a few general warning signs that apply not just to these chicken jerky treats, but commercial foods and treats in general. Here are the top five lessons we feel pet owners should learn from these unfortunate events.

Titer Testing

Enlightened veterinarians and pet parents have become increasingly wary of the health risks, and lack of benefits, associated with repeatedly vaccinating dogs after their initial “puppy shots.” Is titer testing the solution to the over-vaccination problem? Here’s a crash course to help you muddle through the mire of misinformation surrounding this simple blood test, and to help you decide whether or not to test your dog’s antibody titers.

What is titer testing?A titer test (pronounced TIGHT er) is a laboratory test measuring the existence and level of antibodies to disease in blood. Antibodies are produced when an antigen (like a virus or bacteria) provokes a response from the immune system. This response can come from natural exposure or from vaccination. (Note: titering is also called serum vaccine antibody titering and serologic vaccine titering.) Read the entire article

Beware: Chicken Jerky Treats Made In China

A Houston woman said she went through a nightmare involving deadly dog treats while visiting relatives in Connecticut last week.

Sallie Des Biens said she bought some Waggin’ Train chicken jerky treats at a grocery store for her daughter-in-law’s dog, Major. After Des Biens fed Major a few treats, the dog went into liver failure and died.

“My daughter-in-law is a med student and couldn’t be home when her dog died. I feel so guilty,” Des Biens said. “I don’t have any pets, and mistakenly assumed if you could buy something at any store, it must be safe.”

Des Biens did some research and discovered other cases where chicken jerky was suspected in animal poisonings.

In fact, the FDA issued a warning in November: “In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China

Tainted Chicken Jerky Treats Are Still on the Shelves of Many Retailers Despite Numerous Reports of Sickened Pets

CLEVELAND, OH— Following an increase in tainted pet treats from China leading to animal deaths and illnesses, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take quick action to protect consumers and pet owners. At a news conference today in Cleveland, Brown was joined by Kevin Thaxton, whose 10 year-old pug, Chancey, passed away unexpectedly after eating chicken jerky pet treats. After Mr. Thaxton’s new five-month old puppy, Penny suffered life-threatening kidney failure after eating the same treats, the Thaxton’s saw an FDA warning connecting the illnesses between the two dogs: tainted chicken jerky pet treats imported from China.

Treats

Few things bring more enjoyment to your dog than the reward of a treat. And it makes us feel good, too. The very act of giving a treat helps to solidify the bond that we share with our canine companions.Unfortunately, many of the canine snacks available on the market today are non-nutritive “junk foods”, that could be harmful to your dog’s health. It’s important to remember that even if you feed your dog a diet of healthy food, “junk food” treats could have a significant negative impact on his or her health. Thankfully, you don’t have to abandon this great way to reward your dog. There’s no reason treats can’t be nutritious and tasty. At Life's Abundance, we approach our baked treats differently than our competitors. When we formulate our baked cookies, we treat them as important vehicles for nutrition and pleasure. You have our guarantee – we do not create pet products simply on measures of taste or texture. This is a wholly unique approach in the pet product industry.
