Is Your Dog Afraid of the Vet?

Does your puppy or dog begin shaking and whining whenever you pull into the veterinary clinic parking lot? Perhaps it's time to start some training! It's time to show your dog that the vet’s office is the greatest place on earth!

Training obviously works better if you start when your dog is a puppy, but any dog can benefit from having positive experiences at your veterinary office.

Here are some suggestions:

Ask your vet if you can bring your dog in for a few quick visits. Perhaps just a pop in for a treat, to see the folks at the front desk, pop in to see the groomer and leave! Work up to spending a few minutes feeding your dog treats, and eventually allowing the staff and your vet to feed treats as well and then leave.

On your next visit, ask if you can take your dog back to an examination room or to get weighed. Feed him treats in the room and then leave. Next time, have a tech or your vet pop in and offer treats!

Always leave on a positive note! If your dog is frightened by something, find
an area where he’s willing to take treats and take it a bit slower. Don’t leave right after your dog has reacted so that you don't reinforce the wrong behavior.
If your dog is afraid, wait until he calms down a little before leaving.

If your dog is extremely fearful, you may have to work a bit harder! Consider feeding him his meals at the vet's office in a quiet area a couple of times per week.

Remember that an extremely fearful dog might not be able to enter the building during the first few sessions. If your dog starts shaking or displaying fear when you pull in the parking lot, start by rewarding him for calming down and once he has improved, move up to going inside.

You can practice a pretend vet exam at home with your dog. Offer treats while looking in the ears, mouth, examining feet and handling your dog. Gently open your dog's mouth and pop in a tiny piece of a treat. Swtich off and get other family members and friends to do the same thing. Getting your puppy used to being handled at a young age will definitely put you in good with your vet!

Home Made Dog Treat!

Sweet potato chews are a great alternative to the ever present rawhide chews, which contrary to "pupular" belief, really aren't good for dogs.

They present a choking hazard, and they don't digest very easily and could become lodged in the intestines creating a dangerous health hazard. In addition, many rawhides are processed with chemicals which aren't good for dogs either.

So what's a dog to do? Make some yummy sweet potato chews! Click here for the recipe!

President's Dog Trainer Dies, Hear One of Her Final Interviews

Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz was only 52-years old, when according to a Washington Post story, she died on January 12. There's no word on the specific cause of death, but after being admitted to the hospital she soon died after falling into a coma.

Sylvia-Stasiewicz started training Bo, the Obama family Portuguese water dog, at the suggestion of Vicki Kennedy, the wife of the late Massachusetts Democratic senator. The Kennedy family had sent its three dogs, Splash, Sunny and Cappy, to be trained by her and had been pleased with the results.

"She had a wonderful presence," Vicki Kennedy said Friday in an interview. "They would instantly look up to her." Read the entire article

The Meaning of Dog Barks

By: Susan K. Lewis

Can you tell the difference between a dog bark that says "I'm lonely, don't leave me!" and one that warns "Don't get close, I might bite!"? Researchers in Hungary have found that we humans have a remarkable ability to categorize various types of dog vocalizations and understand their emotional content—in effect, to "speak canine." Try it yourself, and learn what this inter-species communication might mean about the evolution of dogs. Read the entire article and take the quiz!

Barking in Dogs: Noise or Communication?

By Sophia Yin, DVM, MS

With over 52 million pet dogs in the U.S.alone and a multi-billion dollar pet food and supply industry, it’s clear that dogs are a part of family life in America. To those who actually own and live near dogs, another fact is also clear—some dogs just talk too much. It’s “Bark! Bark! Let me in” or “Bark! Bark! Feed me” or “Bark, Bark! A leaf just fell.” Dogs can be such champions of conversation that many communities have passed ordinances forcing them to shut their yaps.

Anyone who’s experienced these annoying oratories in the dead of night is probably wondering, “What’s the deal?” Do some dogs just like to hear the sound of their voices, or are they actually communicating specific messages? In fact, many researchers have concluded in passing that barking isn’t a specific form of communication; rather, it’s just a loud, obnoxious way for dogs to say, “Hey. Look at me!” The more specific information comes from reading body expression and olfactory messages (which is why dogs spend so much time sniffing each other—they’re gathering the latest gossip). Rover the Litter Box Raider

Sophia Yin, DVM

Why do dogs don this eclectic assortment of culinary cravings? The answer lies in studies of free-roaming, human-avoiding dogs in rural areas of other countries. These dogs don’t survive by playing the great four-legged hunter. Instead, they raid the Mother Lode of trash cans: the local dump. And with all the competition amongst rival groups, they can’t be choosy. If it smells edible, the rule is “eat first and ask questions later.”

But why do your refined city dogs engage in scavenging like these rural heathen hounds? And why your cat’s poop? Because they can and because it’s there. Some owners are lucky because their dogs haven’t figured it out. Once they do, it’s “end of story.” Dogs practically lie in wait for a chance at this secret stash. Will kitty leave them a tasty treat this time? Once the prize is placed, it stares them in the eye like a luscious brownie on the third day of your no-chocolate diet

Keeping Cold Noses Warm

Keeping Cold Noses Warm: Harsh Weather Tips for Dogs and Cats

As I floundered in to work this morning, I was charmed by the sight of a handsome Pit Bull cross doing the breast stroke in a snow drift. Crisp days and fluffy snow can bring out the inner dog in a dog, but harsh weather also brings real hazards to man’s best friend and other companion animals. Here are some do’s, don’ts and guidelines.

The American Kennel Club (AKC®) offers the following tips: Read more...

Canine Joint Disease

Unfortunately, arthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting dogs in America today. In 2008, arthritis was listed among the top ten disease conditions in dogs (source: VPI). According to recent data, there are as many as 10 million dogs currently suffering from the chronic pain of joint disease, and one in five dogs will develop arthritis or joint disease during their lifetimes.

Otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, arthritis is caused by the loss of cartilage that covers the tips of bones in movable joints, such as the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, etc. Arthritis is generally a wear-and-tear disease seen more often in older dogs. As a result of continual rubbing, the cartilage wears away leaving bone ends exposed to each other. Since there are no nerve endings in the cartilage, no pain is felt until the cartilage is worn away; but when that happens, the edges of bones rub together causing pain and inflammation. Read more
