Vaccuming the Fleas

Homeowners dogged by household fleas need look no farther than the broom closet to solve their problem. Scientists have determined that vacuuming kills fleas in all stages of their lives, with an average of 96 percent success in adult fleas and 100 percent destruction of younger fleas.

Pessimistic Pooches?

Roughly half of the population of dogs in the UK are likely to - at some point in their lives - exhibit "undesirable separation-related behavior (SRB)." These are things that sometimes happen when left alone, like barking, chewing up or otherwise destroying objects, and urinating (or worse!) inside the house. While some owners view these behaviors as fine and normative, and while some will seek out professional guidance, many are motivated to give up the dog. In this paper, veterinary scientist Michael Mendl and colleagues were interested in what makes people surrender their pet dogs for adoption (or, as they call it across the pond, "re-homing.") They wondered: do the dogs with the most SRB have some kind of negative underlying affect? Are they grumpy? Can dogs be, essentially, depressed?

Blue Buffalo Recall - Dog Food

Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd. Recalls Limited Production Code Dates of Dry Dog Food Because of Possible Excess Vitamin D

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 8, 2010 - Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd., recalls certain dry dog food because of possible excess Vitamin D that can affect the health of some dogs. The Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd., is recalling certain packages of its Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods sold under thc "BLUE" brand which have the potential to contain excessive levels of Vitamin D.

While Vitamin D is a beneficial component of these foods, the Company believes that these products may have levels of Vitamin D that are beyond the formula specifications, and has therefore chosen to withdraw them.

Dogs reacting to the higher levels of Vitamin D may show signs of lethargy or exhibit unusually frequent water consumption and urination. If your pet has consumed the recalled products and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The affected productions of Blue Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods were distributed nationwide through pet specialty stores.

Little Heroes

This past year, in conjunction with the Little Heroes Foundation and Mali Rising, Nature’s Sunshine helped establish the Little Heroes Academy in Mana, Mali, Africa. Mali is among the 25 poorest countries in the world, and its people have severely limited educational opportunities. The Little Heroes Academy, which features three classrooms and two administrative offices, will provide a resource for up to 200 children each year to get an education.
