Coprophagia

What is coprophagia? For those of you that have a dog that does it, no explanation is necessary. But for the rest of us…

According to Wikipedia, coprophagia is the consumption of feces, from the Greek κόπρος copros ("feces") and φαγεῖν phagein ("to eat"). Many animal species practice coprophagia as a matter of course; other species do not normally consume feces but may do so under unusual conditions.

Gross!

It is a fact of life: many of us know and love a dog that practices this disgusting gustatory habit, and many dog owners are pulling their hair out trying to get their pet to stop! Read the entire article

Natural Flea Control: How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your Yard

The beneficial nematode, alias "killer roundworm," may be nature's simplest answer yet for getting rid of troublesome, blood sucking fleas that infest backyards, homes and pets each year like clockwork.

The nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae, hunts down fleas in the pre-adult, pupae, and larval stages of their growth, which account for 95 percent of the flea population, even searching out the fleas that lie dormant in cocoons before reaching maturity. The killer roundworm enters the pest's body through any convenient opening, such as the spiracles, where air is taken in, and releases a bacteria that kills the flea within 48 hours.

When the host is dead, the nematode sheds its skin and begins to reproduce inside the corpse. The offspring hunt for new prey, destroying the remaining fleas in the wake of the nematode life cycle. If there are no host bugs to be found, the nematodes starve and biodegrade, leaving no harmful backyard bug alive to tell the story.

The killer nematodes have been perfected and raised by Biosys, a company that specializes in biological pest control. At Biosys headquarters in Palo Alto, California, studies have been conducted over the past decade on the uses of the nematode.

The killer roundworm has been implemented commercially over the past five years to combat cranberry and citrus pests, but was never available to the garden growing public due to certain impracticalities in growing and shipping the "flea-killing commandos," say the nematode researchers. Feline's Pride - Expanded Food Recall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 15, 2010 - Buffalo, NY – Feline’s Pride is expanding its July 1, 2010 voluntary recall of Feline’s Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.) produced on 6/10/10 to include the product produced on 6/21/10, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. People handling raw pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the raw pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.

When consumed by humans, Salmonella can cause an infection, salmonellosis. The symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, minimal diarrhea, fever, and headache. Certain vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to acquiring salmonellosis from such pet food products and may experience more severe symptoms.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The product is packaged in uncoded plastic containers and sold frozen to private consumers nationwide. Once thawed, the pet food has a shelf life of about 1 week. The firm manufactures the pet food by an as-ordered basis. This expansion of the recall affects those orders placed and shipped from June 21 through June 26, 2010 (produced on 6/21/10). Why Do Cats Purr?

As a veterinarian, I am commonly asked “Why do cats purr?” Most people believe cats purr when they are content or happy. While cats do purr when they are content, researchers attempting to uncover the answer to this 3,000-year-old mystery are finding the answer more complicated than previously thought. All domestic cats purr, as well as many wild cats, like pumas, ocelots, lions and cheetahs. Purring can occur in a variety of situations. When cats purr in the presence of other unknown cats or kittens, the behavior may serve to convey submissiveness or a friendly greeting. While it is true that cats purr contentedly while on their pet parent’s lap, they also purr when they give birth, when they are frightened, severely injured and even while dying. Because kitties clearly cannot be content in all these situations, contentment or friendliness cannot be the only reason they purr. Read the entire article

Thunderstorm Phobia

Summer storms are starting up, and that means that thunder is not far behind (along with scared dogs!). Here are some ideas from Dr. McConnell, from her blog of 5/8/2009.

Here are some of treatments that might help your dog, although a thorough discussion of treatments requires a booklet unto itself.

Counter Classical Conditioning:

This is the first treatment I recommend, and it is especially effective in mild or moderate cases. click here to read the entire article

Robin's Note:

I have found that Distress Remedy has been helpful for dogs in distress. Click here to read more about Distress Remedy

Distress Remedy

Distress Remedy is a homeopathic flower medicine that provides relief for minor accidents, injuries and bruises; pain and inflammation; and emotional upset due to physical trauma.

Flower remedies have served well in several areas of pet care, including:

• Aiding in learning, cognitive skills
• Fears, phobias, anxiety
• Confidence and enjoyment of life
• Obsessive/compulsive disorders
• Recuperation from surgery, trauma or illness
• Rescue and rehabilitation of traumatized pets and wildlife

Distress Remedy is easy to administer to animals. It can be added to your pet’s food or water bowl. My recommendation for pets is four drops of Distress Remedy up to four times a day, or eight drops twice a day if you would like to add it to your pet’s meal. Other ways of administering it are to put the drops on your hand and let your pet lick it off. You can also add it to small pieces of bread or absorbent dog/cat biscuits/treats, which makes for a great training reward. It can be otherwise absorbed via the skin if it is difficult to administer drops via the mouth or via a bit of food when an animal is in distress.

Adults: Take 10–15 drops under the tongue every 10–15 minutes, or as needed until symptoms improve. Then decrease to every one to two hours, then to four times daily until symptoms are relieved.
